Femara(generic name is letrozole) is a new drug developed for the treatment of advanced breast cancer in women. 5. Femara is the second in a new class of third-generation selective oral aromatase inhibitors. 6. It acts by blocking the enzyme aromatase, subsequently blocking the production of estrogen.In one male test subject Letrozole was able to reduce estrogen levels to undetectable levels. Letrozole is able to raise testosterone in male subjects. Letrozole (Femara) is used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Letrozole is often given to women who have been taking tamoxifen (Nolvadex, Soltamox) for 5 years. Letrozole is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor (lowers estrogen production). Letrozole is available in generic form. Common side effects include hot flashes, hair loss, joint/bone/muscle pain, tiredness, unusual sweating, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and trouble sleeping.
